Self-improvement & Bibliotherapy
When you read this
you’ll discover . . .
“How enlightened, happy, fulfilled people are living the life of
their dreams doing what you aren’t”
(All based on proven theories of counseling and psychotherapy!)
Dear friend,
Are you truly happy? Well are you? That’s a legitimate
question you know. Experts estimate that 30 million Americans are unhappy and depressed. Granted, some
people have a biological problem. Nevertheless, I think you’ll agree that a high number of people
don’t suffer from a Prozac deficiency! What they do suffer from is a distinct lack of knowledge
about how to change their own behavior. In fact, many --if not most of them-- are downright clueless.
Many folks turn to . . .
Self help books loaded with inaccurate and harmful information that could
prove downright deadly!
In the 1980’s I co-authored
a journal article in which we actually discovered that some self-improvement books gave information that was downright deadly.
After the article appeared I didn’t really do anything with the information until I was contacted many years
later by a well-known counselor named Dr. Joseph W. Hollis. Maybe you’ve heard of Joe.
The catalyst for positive mental health was the late, great counselor
educator Dr. Joseph W. Hollis
Joe was a prince of a guy and a true leader in the helping professions. Joe died recently and
his notoriety was such that Counseling Today, the Newsletter for the American Counseling Association (ACA), ran his
death as a front-page story. I was honored to be quoted in the story and Joe’s wife Marcey later
wrote me to thank me for the kind words. Joe actually started an ACA Division, had been a Professor of Counseling, and even
owned a large company that only published counseling books.
When Joe owned his book publishing company (Accelerated Development, Inc.)
he would travel the U.S. putting up book displays at all the major conferences devoted to counseling and psychotherapy.
He loved rubbing elbows with counselors and chewing the fat with them about the art and science of helping others.
One day when
I opened my afternoon mail I found a long letter from Joe. Joe always penned his letters in his own handwriting.
He never used a typewriter or a computer. That was his trademark and you always knew the letter
was really from him and not ghost written by an assistant or sent via an auto e-mail responder.
Joe told me that again and
again . . . in conference after conference . . . counselors approached him and wanted an easy-to-comprehend self-help book.
But unlike many of the books on the shelves: they wanted a book that they wouldn’t
be embarrassed to give their clients. It had to be short, sweet, and to the point. “No fluff,” Joe insisted.
“I mean zero.” The book had to be based on ethical, psychotherapeutic principles from
the world’s greatest theorists, but it had to be easy enough to understand, so that virtually anybody with no background
in the field could benefit from the ideas
I was extremely flattered
when Joe chose me as his co-author!
As I read the
letter I found myself nodding to myself that Joe (per usual) was right on target. This book was a necessity.
Nevertheless, what came next was a pleasant surprise. Joe had published a couple of my books (Not
With My Life I Don’t, Preventing Your Suicide And That Of Others and the first edition of the Encyclopedia
of Counseling) and he liked my engaging, conversational style. He knew that my lively presentations to over 100,000 people
had made me one of the most popular mental health speakers in the Midwest. Joe therefore insisted that
I co-author the book with him. I did.
Joe chose the name Help Yourself to Positive Mental Health to piggyback
on the presidential idea at the time that we take charge of our own health.
Positive
Mental Health Is Born!
The World Wide Web was first getting off the ground
and America Online (AOL) featured this book as an AOL Psych Online Cover Story on three separate occasions! I
was told that this was a record, but I have no idea if that was really the case.
I immediately began using our book Help Yourself to Positive Mental Health
in the Theories and Skills classes I was teaching. College students loved the book and were
using many of the techniques on themselves . . . often ridding themselves of bad habits in just days!
A sociology teacher read and loved the book and made it a requirement in her popular Human Relations class. Another
teacher saw it and added it to her reading list. Moreover, I began to receive letters and e-mails from
folks who said they were giving a friend or loved one a copy of Help Yourself to Positive Mental Health instead of
another necktie or perhaps a gift certificate to the local mall.
THE BOOK RECEIVES THE ULTIMATE COMPLIMENT
A therapist stopped me one day after a workshop
to say that it was her belief that our little 126- page vest pocket Hercules was possibly the “most powerful
self-improvement book ever written.”
Help Yourself to Positive Mental Health is packed with 50 strategies
that reveal a whole new way of living! Each strategy is explained in one page or less. (Albert
Einstein once commented that if you couldn’t explain a principle in a matter of minutes you probably didn’t understand
it yourself.)
WHO ELSE WANTS TO KNOW THESE SECRETS OF POSITIVE MENTAL HEALTH!
