How to publish your counseling book

When you read this you’ll discover . . .

How to publish your counseling or human services book

“When was the last time you did something serious to take your career to the next level?”

Dear Counselor,

Did you ever think about the fact that the future might hold bigger and better things for you?  Things that could make you happier . . . others happier . . . things that could make you more successful . . . things that quite frankly could change your life forever?  Well did you?

If so, then read on because this just might turn out to be the most important letter you will ever read . . . and no I assure you I am not exaggerating!

A single factor (yes, just one) determines who will become a famous counselor or therapist

For the past several years I’ve been working on a fascinating project that I want to share with you.  Basically, I’ve been interviewing some of the top counselors and therapists who walk the face of the planet earth.  You know the names:  luminaries such as Albert Ellis, the world’s greatest living psychologist who created REBT; William Glasser, who pioneered the new Reality Therapy with Choice Theory; Dick Bolles, the mastermind behind the What Color Is Your Parachute career counseling phenomenon; and Sam Gladding, who served a term as the president of ACA, to name a few.  All of my lively interviews will be included in a new book that will be released this summer titled Therapy’s Best, Practical Advice and Gems of Wisdom from Twenty Accomplished Counselors and Therapists but that’s not what this letter is about.  This letter is about something far more important: your personal future.

Here’s what’s in it for you!

Perhaps the most intriguing part of writing the book was an accidental finding (a monumental serendipitous discovery, if you will) that I made while conducting my research.  Simply put, the common thread among the best and the brightest was that nearly every single helper was catapulted to the top of the field after he or she wrote a book.

Again, and again, and again, almost without exception, I was confronted with this simple, yet profound fact.

So just how does a counselor get a book published?

Good question, darn good question. Many counselors and human service professionals I speak with would love to see their name in print.  Unfortunately, they don’t have a clue where to begin.  In some instances these experts have a complete book manuscript, replete with valuable information, sitting in their file cabinet, but now that the writing is complete they haven’t the foggiest notion how to turn the document into a book.  (There’s an old saying that the best book in the world is sitting in someone’s file cabinet . . . and it’s probably true.)  Others have an idea, but they don’t know if the idea is suitable for a book.

I have been a book review reader for a number of the top publishers in our field and can attest to the fact that most counselors either don’t know the protocol for a book submission, have no idea how to sell their idea, or worse yet, both!

While reading the materials, it would occur to me that the author might have the seed of a good idea, but a lack of knowledge related to the book submission process, ensured the counselor would never sell the manuscript.

Have you ever noticed that courses that focus on book publishing are conspicuously missing from undergraduate and graduate behavioral science programs?  This is understandable since in many cases the professor teaching the class has never published a book.

I have just released new lively fast paced 74-minute audio program, which is intended to fill this void.

Here’s Why I’m The Perfect Mentor!

Not Just Another “How To Publish Your Book” Program.

In 1988 when I decided to write my first book I was confronted with the secrecy that shrouded the act of publishing a behavioral science book.  I contacted therapists who were authors and they told me virtually nothing.  Some bordered on belligerent, seemingly shocked that I would even ask.  I felt hopeless. But I made a vow that if I ever understood the system I would share my findings with other counselors and human service workers, and put an end to the secrecy.

Now I know how to crack the system.  I know the techniques and the insider secrets that will help you get your book published

I have personally published a string of successful books in this field.  Punch up the keyword “counseling” on Amazon or bn.com and my text the Encyclopedia of Counseling will often show its mug in the number one or two spot.  I have had as many as three of my books in Amazon’s top seven slots in a single day.  Not bad.

Moreover, I was one of sixty authors – along with Barry Sears of the Zone Diet fame and Mark Victor Hanson co-author of the Chicken Soup for the Soul series – interviewed in Jeff Herman’s book You Can Make It Big Writing Books: A Top Agent Shows You How to Develop a Million Dollar Bestseller.

I’ve been conducting seminars and a continuing education college course called 16-Sure-Fire Ways to Publish Your Nonfiction Book for over 10 years now.  In addition, my nonfiction book publishing audio CD is the bestselling one in the history of Ebay.

Now I’ve Crammed All Of My Secrets Onto An All New 74 Minute Audio CD titled

How To Publish Your Counseling Or Human Services Book . . .

And you’re going to love it!  The CD is jam-packed with information.  No

fluff or filler.

Highlights of this program include:

·        The three types of book publishing.  Pick the wrong one and watch your bank account drop like a lead airplane.  Unfortunately, several of my own colleagues took this road to nowhere and are paying for it dearly!

·        How to research an idea to make sure it will sell.  Hint:  99 out of 100 counselors don’t have a clue how to accomplish this.

·        Why you need to fine-tune and position your book in today’s counseling and human services market.  This factor is rarely discussed in generic works about how to publish a book.  In fact, the type of book that most counselors tell me they wish to write is the least likely to end up on the bookshelves.

·        Some key thoughts on picking appropriate titles you haven’t heard before.

·        When a good subtitle is a must.

·        The four things you need for any agent or book publishing company.

·        How to be a book editor rather than a book author.  I’ve done it on several occasions for more than one publisher and so can you.

·        Thinking of sending an agent or editor a book manuscript?  Horrors! Find out why I say that’s “dumb, dumb, dumb, and well dumber.”  Don’t make a move until you listen to my sage advice.  Most of the time you only get one chance in this rough and tumble business.  Don’t blow it.

·        How to write a special type of letter to an agent or publisher that commands respect.

·        My 11 key strategies for submitting your materials even if the publisher provides no guidelines.

·        A special checklist to rate your own materials you won’t find elsewhere.  Worth more than the price of the CD!

·        Why most counselors listening to the program will never (yes I said never) need a book agent.

·        Teaching a course?  Find out how somebody you come in contact with on a regular basis can open doors for you in the book publishing business.  Most counselors have never heard this before and therefore miss an excellent chance to network.

·        My psychology of the pinball machine strategy for picking a publisher. Nearly every counselor who writes a book goes about it all wrong.  All the top therapists in the field already know this technique.  You should too.

·        Are multiple submissions ethical? Let me share some good news that was conspicuously missing from your ethic’s course in grad school.

·        Why any counselor can use simple strategies to boost his or her credentials as a writer.  And hey, it’s even enjoyable!

·        Good news: Why counselors, therapists and human service professionals have a huge advantage over the average person who decides to write a book.

·        A hard-hitting question and answer session that covers the questions I am asked the most when presenting book-publishing workshops.  (For example:  How authors can make considerably more than what is on their royalty checks.  And yes, it’s ethical and squeaky- clean legal.)

·        The real reason why publishers want you to succeed.

·        Are you artistic or into photography?  This single strategy could help you land a lucrative book contract.

·        The anatomy of a winner: I’ll tell you precisely how I made my book The Human Services Dictionary into a success that is helping thousands of students and professionals. This isn’t hype . . . it’s a fact.  And more importantly: how you can do the same.

Again, let me assure you I’ve pulled out the stops and created what I firmly believe is the finest program ever created to help you see your book in print.  Again, I know that’s a very strong statement, but I firmly believe it is the truth. Absolutely nothing is held back. This audio 74-minute audio CD is so fast- paced and lively, you’ll be thinking of excuses not to turn it off.

Let’s use a little guided imagery. Close your eyes, yes right this very minute, and imagine your name on the cover of your own beautiful new book.  Feels pretty good, doesn’t it?
