CECE Exam Prep Guide

YES, MY MATERIALS ARE SUCCESSFULLY WORKING FOR COUNSELORS TAKING THE CECE AND ARE RECOMMENDED FOR THIS EXAM! HERE’S WHY:

Some graduate schools are using the CECE or Counselor Education Comprehensive Exam, to replace the CPCE or Counselor Preparation Comprehensive Exam. The development of the exam was spearheaded and coordinated by Dr. Richard Halstead at the University of St. Joseph in West Hartford, Connecticut (USJ) as an alternative to the CPCE (Counselor Preparation Comprehensive Examination). Counselor educators around the nation have contributed by writing and evaluating questions. The questions are evaluated on an ongoing basis.

The CECE uses the EXACT same CACREP eight content areas as the CPCE. The exam has 15 items per content area (15 x 8), or 120 items total. Unlike the NCE or the CPCE, there are no pilot or field-tested questions. One terrific feature is that the CECE – often dubbed an exit exam – is currently being administered without a fee to the student! Nice. The time limit for the exam is set at three and a half hours. Preparation should be identical to the CPCE. The student often takes the exam on Blackboard (an online teaching platform) and may be monitored on Zoom. The passing score is set by your graduate school, so please speak with your graduate program about specifics.

At this point in time (September 2021), 127 counseling programs are using the exam, most of those institutions began using it during the pandemic.
